Staged Reading: The Taming--A New Political Comedy

ATLANTA, GA – Playwright Lauren Gunderson said that any theatre company, group, or person who wants to do a reading of The Taming – A New Political Comedy (The Tamingon Inauguration Day 2017 can do so for FREE – so The Weird Sisters Theatre Project, Synchronicity Theatre, and 7 Stages have “elected” to take her up on her offer!

If you aren’t marching on Washington, or making a quick escape to Canada, join us on Friday, January 20 at 7:00pm at 7 Stages Theatre to see a FREE staged reading of Gunderson’s modern, political satire that “takes the sass, sex and banter of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew and tags in American politics.” $10 suggested donation to go to the ACLU. Cash preferred at the door.

A crackling modern political farce, The Taming takes on America’s overheated political rhetoric and upends historical truths about our founding fathers. When a conservative senatorial aid, a liberal political activist, and a very sparkly beauty queen find themselves locked in a hotel room, the political passions of these slightly insane women prove they might just be revolutionary geniuses. Inside the heightened, cheerfully absurd world of The Taming, Gunderson spanks America’s sound bite politics with the switch of actual history, and proves Shakespeare’s point that true debate is hot.

The Taming is directed by Weird Sister’s Kate Donadio MacQueen and stars Atlanta-based actors Rachel Frawley as Bianca, Caroline Arapoglou as Katherine, Tiffany Morgan as Patricia, and Chelcy Cutwright as Voices.

Tweetering, pandashrews, and undying giddiness for James Madison -- what else could you expect to find at a Miss America pageant? In this hilarious, raucous, all-female "power-play," inspired by Shakespeare's Shrew, contestant Katherine has political aspirations to match her beauty pageant ambitions. All she needs to revolutionize the American government is the help of one ultra-conservative senator's aide on the cusp of a career breakthrough, and one bleeding- heart liberal blogger who will do anything for her cause. Well, that and a semi-historically-accurate ether trip. Here's lookin' at you, America.

ABOUT THE WEIRD SISTERS THEATRE PROJECT

Founded in 2012, the Weird Sisters Theatre Project creates theatre by women, for everyone, and is committed to cultivating opportunities for female artists, both onstage and off. Founded by Kelly Criss, Veronika Duerr, Jaclyn Hofmann, Tiffany Porter, and Megan Rose-Houchins, the Project now lives on with a new team of Sisters. Shelli Delgado, Kate Donadio MacQueen, Rachel Frawley, Julie Skrzypek, and Rebekah Suellau have taken up the torch and continue to build on the foundation of mentorship and opportunity for female voices in Atlanta.

ABOUT SYNCHRONICITY THEATRE

Synchronicity Theatre, led by Producing Artistic Director Rachel May and Managing Director & Artistic Associate Lee Nowell, produces smart, gutsy, high quality theatre that sparks community connections and uplifts the voices of women and girls. Synchronicity supports women artists, forges long-term and effective community partnerships and develops new work. Synchronicity was founded in 1997 by four women with a desire to work collaboratively and bring challenging, meaningful theatre to Atlanta audiences. We now reach nearly 8,000 patrons through our season of plays for adults (Bold Voices) and families (Family Series); community outreach; and educational programming, including our Playmaking for Kids (PFK) summer camps and after school programs and our award-winning Playmaking for Girls (PFG) program. Our intimate theatre in the heart of midtown at Peachtree Pointe became our home in the summer of 2014.
